Catholic Schools Week is recognized each year to celebrate Catholic education. Now in its 46th year, Catholic Schools Week will be celebrated from Sunday, January 26th to Saturday, February 1st, 2020.
"Catholic Schools Week gives our students an opportunity to have fun, and to show prospective students what our school is all about," explained Maria Anderson, PSO President for St. Joan of Arc Catholic School. "We'll kick off the week on Sunday, January 26th, with our annual "Pack the Mass", where all our students and their families will attend 9:30 a.m. Mass."
The community and prospective students are then invited to join SJA for their All School Open House from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. "The school will be open so prospective students and their families can learn about us," added Anderson. "Teachers will be in their classrooms to answer questions, and student representatives will be available to discuss clubs and sports. We'll also host a Book Fair; the proceeds will benefit our library."
During the week, students can dress up for a designated theme each day, and they'll participate in Career Day and in the traditional Geography Bee. The Harlem Wizards will visit and show off their incredible basketball skills.
The service aspect of CSW will include the annual penny wars competition, where grades are grouped into teams to collect pennies; the winning team chooses the charity to receive the donation. "We'll have a fundraiser at a local restaurant to add to the penny wars donation, and we'll also host a food drive," added Anderson.
Families can participate in a chili cook-off and cupcake wars event as part of the community-building aspect of CSW. "We'll also offer a winter uniform resale event, where gently used uniforms can be purchased," said Anderson. "We'll cap off the week with a special soup luncheon for the teachers and staff, to show our appreciation for all their hard work."
