The Importance of Self-Care During Your Grief Journey

Nobody gets through life without experiencing grief.  Whether it's the loss of a loved one, a precious pet, or even an important job, grief is part of the ups and downs in life.  The greatest loss of all is the loss of a dear loved one, and many people struggle with how to take care of themselves during their grief journey.  At Adolf Funeral Services, Director John Adolf makes every effort to support each client in their time of need.

"I do my best to engage the person in a conversation about their loved one that they've just lost," explained Adolf.  "As a funeral director, I learn much more by listening than I do by talking.  I want each person to understand there is nothing more important at that time than helping them make the best thoughtful and informed decisions possible."

The importance of making thoughtful decisions after the loss of a loved one can not be overstated.  After the fact, people will feel relieved that they took the time to make appropriate choices, and they'll feel like they did right by their loved one.  They won't feel sad or guilty or wish they'd done things differently.  "Many years of experience have taught me that by having people express their feelings and let their emotions out, the healing process begins."

After a loss, a grieving person should not hesitate to ask friends and family for help, whether it's with little things like going to the grocery and preparing meals, or large tasks like selling a home.  Making time for visiting with friends, traveling, continuing an old or finding a new hobby, adopting a pet, volunteering, and finding other ways to engage in one's community will all help with the grieving process.  Don't expect too much too soon, and take one day at a time.
