Be a Smart Consumer When Buying Long-Term Care Insurance

Long-Term Care Insurance has become a hot topic of conversation in recent years.

More and more people witness their older family members needing extended care either at home, adult daycare, assisted living, memory care or even a nursing home. Since care is expensive and caregiving is stressful on family members, consumers seek a way to protect assets and reduce the burdens placed on loved ones.

“People seek help from many sources when learning about Long-Term Care Insurance. Unfortunately, much of the information is incomplete or even wrong when researching online. Local insurance agents and financial advisors usually have little or no real experience with the product, underwriting or how these plans get used at the time of claim,” said Matt McCann, a nationally known speaker on long-term care planning and an expert on Long-Term Care Insurance.

McCann says the internet is a good place to start your search, but he urges you to consider the source.

“Online articles and websites can be helpful, but know they come from a point of view that may attempt to slant you one way or another. Some of the material is also just flat wrong. It comes down to finding the right professional to give you accurate information so you can make the right decision,” McCann said.

There are not many true Long-Term Care specialists in the country who represent the major companies, know the underwriting criteria of each, understand proper policy design and claims. In addition, very few have a full understanding of the Long-Term Care Partnership Program available in 45 states which offers additional dollar-for-dollar asset protection.

“What happens is they make recommendations that can cost you too much money or don’t provide the best benefits for your situation,” McCann explained. “Often, they recommend a company that will not consider you based on your health. It is so important to speak with a qualified specialist to guide you. It is always best to start your research in your 40s and 50s prior to retirement to enjoy the lowest premiums and the most options.”
