Essential oils have grown in popularity in recent years, becoming an important part of homeopathy.

Before you start using essential oils as part of your wellness routine, it’s important to understand how to use them safely. Here are 5 things to know about essential oils.

1. Essential oils can be useful to manage stress through aromatherapy.

According to Kate McCall, a certified aromatherapist and herbalist, the exact science behind how aromas affect the mind is still unknown, but theories suggest that smells are converted into electrical impulses which are then transmitted to different areas of the brain that control our moods, emotions, mental alertness and concentration.

Aromatherapy has been shown to be particularly effective in the prevention and treatment of insomnia, depression, anxiety, muscular pain, and all areas of women’s health.

2. Essential oils can support your immunity.

When the winter months arrive, essential oils offer a natural way to combat ailments, fight viruses and strengthen your immune system. Essential oils like lemon, oregano, frankincense and eucalyptus have been known for their immune-boosting powers!

3. Essential oils can provide relief for sore muscles.

There are a number of different oils that offer relief from muscle pain, tension and swelling.

Peppermint offers a cooling effect on sore, achy muscles and contains anti-inflammatory properties. Lavender and eucalyptus can help relieve pain and sandalwood alleviates muscle spasms, tension and inflammation.

4. There are several ways to use essential oils.

Diffusing, inhaling or applying the oils topically with a carrier oil are common ways to incorporate them into your everyday routines.

Add 2-5 drops of essential oil to bath water or use oils at your next massage!

5. Essential oils have potential side effect.

Essential oils can cause rashes if you are allergic to them. It’s important to always use a carrier oil, which dilutes essential oils. Infants under 2 months old should never be exposed to essential oils, and you should never diffuse oils around pets.
