Prepare your plumbing for the holidays

SPONSORED

The holidays will be here before you know it, and if you’re planning on company coming, it’s not just shopping and dusting you need to think about. Your home’s plumbing could use a little extra attention to make sure your holiday entertaining goes smoothly and emergency-free.

If the water is draining slowly out of your sinks, clear them now. Having a backed-up sink in the middle of preparing your holiday feast is no fun, nor is a dysfunctional garbage disposal. Along the same lines, it’s wise to upgrade sink strainers to make sure your sink will hold water when you need it to, and to catch any scraps that you don’t want to go down the drain.

Make sure to place waste baskets in all bathrooms so guests won’t be tempted to flush things down the toilet that shouldn’t be. Cleaning up an overflowing toilet is not the way to spend a holiday. Likewise, if you typically use thick, cushiony toilet paper, replace it with thinner TP temporarily as a preventative measure so guests won’t clog the toilet.

Give your water heater a thorough check to make sure it’s in good working order. There’s nothing worse than running out of hot water with a houseful of guests.

If you’re the guest instead of the host, there are still some helpful plumbing tips to follow that can prevent a potential disaster. If you’re planning on being away for an extended period make sure to properly shut off the water to your house to prevent frozen or burst pipes. If you have a house sitter while you’re gone let the person know where your gas and water shut-offs are located, and leave a trusted plumber’s number by the phone in case of a plumbing emergency. While the worst is unlikely to happen, the extra precautions could avoid a potential explosion or flood.
