Understanding the 3 Myths of Funeral Planning

Planning your own funeral is a very important task that can save your loved ones time and money down the road.  Many people don't understand the process or the requirements involved with funeral planning, and tend to put it off or ignore it altogether.  Here are 3 myths of funeral planning:

1.  If I prearrange my funeral service, I have to use the funeral home I made the arrangements with.   "Prearranged funeral services are completely portable, which allows you the flexibility to change funeral home providers if you need to, for whatever reason," explained John Adolf, Director of Adolf Funeral Services.  "Even if you've chosen to prepay for your services, those funds remain in your control until the services have been provided."

2.  Prepaying for my funeral service is not a good idea.  One of the main reasons why it's a good idea to prepay for services is that it removes the responsibility and worry of taking care of those expenses from your survivors.  "Most often today, funds set aside to pay for funeral services in advance are invested in an insurance policy for your benefit, which increases in value over time to pay for the services when they're needed," added Adolf.  "Another good reason to prepay for services is that you're purchasing these items at today's cost, rather than at the higher future cost."

3.  I've already purchased cemetery property, so my arrangements are complete.  "Unfortunately, there are many people who do believe this is the only end-of-life decision they need to be concerned with," said Adolf.  "The purpose of prearranging services is to help alleviate the responsibility from your survivors.  It also provides you the opportunity and control to select items and services as you wish, and removes any doubt as to what you would have wanted."
