DOWNERS GROVE - Community High School District 99 Controller Mark Staehlin has been recognized by the Illinois Association of School Business Officials (IASBO) as its 2020 Monarch Award Winner, the highest honor ASBO bestows upon its members.

The award is not just a measure of extraordinary deeds or a lengthy career, it is a recognition of those school business officials who, throughout their career and lifetime, have demonstrated excellence in service to their school district, communities and their profession. This award is a celebration of the best school business management has to offer, according to ASBO.

“Mark has a great global view of how finances impact what we do as a school district and what it means for students and families,” District 99 Superintendent Hank Thiele said in a statement. “He is a visionary leader through finance and we’re fortunate to have him on our team.”

“Mark’s approach to financial planning and decisions is made with a visual image of a target and the center of that target is the student,” District 99 Business Manager Jeree Ethridge said in a statement. “By using this student-focused approach, Mark has gained the trust and respect of teachers, support staff, fellow administrators and the school board.”

As controller since 1994, Staehlin oversees all financial aspects of District 99, including strategic financial planning, accounting, auditing and reporting. In addition to his role as controller, he has served as the treasurer, executive officer and president of IASBO. He has also served on a variety of financial advisory committees for the Illinois State Board of Education and has presented numerous workshops on financial topics.

Staehlin was featured in a video created by IASBO recognizing his accomplishments and sharing testimonials from his colleagues at District 99.
