U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood endorsed Joe Biden for president on the day the former vice president announced California Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate.

Underwood, D-Naperville, called Biden the “experienced, empathetic leader we need in the White House” to “restore American leadership in the world,” in a statement. She mentioned how Biden campaigned with her in St. Charles in 2018.

“We trust his leadership, we know he shares our values, and we have seen his commitment to lifting up the next generation of American leaders,” Underwood said in her statement. “Vice President Biden is a good, decent man. I am proud to endorse his candidacy for President of the United States.”

The congresswoman also lauded Harris, who is the first African American and Asian American woman to compete on a major party’s presidential ticket, as an “effective leader and a trailblazer.”

“I have long admired her fearless fight for justice, relentless advocacy for women and families and for showing us all how to lead with grace and grit,” Underwood said in the statement.

Underwood made history herself when she was elected in 2018 as the youngest Black woman to serve in the House of Representatives.

The freshman congresswoman is also in a competitive general election campaign against Republican State Sen. Jim Oberweis to represent the Illinois 14th Congressional District.

The 14th District includes parts of northwestern Will County and portions of Kendall, Kane, DeKalb, McHenry, DuPage and Lake counties.
