U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski fired back in response to his progressive colleague U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsing one of his 2020 primary opponents, Marie Newman.
In a statement, Lipinski, D-Western Springs, said New York Democrat Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement “makes crystal clear that Ms. Newman is an extreme candidate who is completely out of step with the voters of Illinois’ 3rd District, who do not want to be represented by a fifth member of the ‘Squad.’ ”
The incumbent congressman has routinely tried to paint his most prominent primary challenger as far left. He narrowly defeated Newman when she first challenged him in the 2018 primary election.
“The Democratic Party – and our country – cannot afford an obstructionist ‘Tea Party of the Left’ when we need to focus on winning this next election and passing policies that will truly help working families and all who are struggling in America today,” Lipinski said in the statement.
Lipinski also attacked Newman for her support of a “Medicare for All” health insurance system, which he argued would take away private health insurance from millions of Americans.
Without citing specific numbers, he also said the policy would “double federal income taxes for the average family in the Third District.”
“Third District residents want commonsense leadership and someone who fights for workable policies,” he said.
