Newman announces second primary challenge against Lipinski

Marie Newman announced that she was running for a second time to unseat U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, from his position as Illinois 3rd Congressional District’s representative.

Newman announced her second bid on social media Tuesday.

“That’s right – I’m throwing my hat in the ring once again to take on Dan Lipinski in the primary next March,” Newman wrote in a post on Facebook. “I know it sounds early, but getting started now is the way grassroots campaigns like ours can win.”

Newman ran against Lipinski in the 2018 Democratic primary and narrowly lost. She positioned herself as the progressive alternative to Lipinski, whom she claimed was out of touch with voters.

The incumbent has been in Congress since 2005.

“Look, I know we’ll be up against a lot in the months ahead,” Newman said. “But thanks to friends like you, I’m not scared of machine politics, deep-pocketed special interests or conservative D.C. insiders. They’re no match for what you and I will build together.”

In the 2018 primary, Newman lost by a little over 2,100 votes, or about 2% of the votes cast. The 3rd District includes all or parts of Crest Hill, Homer Glen, Lemont, Lockport and Romeoville in Will County, and stretches to the southwest side of Chicago near Midway Airport. Lipinski soundly defeated Holocaust denier Arthur Jones in the general election by a two-to-one margin.

A representative from Lipinski’s campaign did not comment Tuesday.
