DOWNERS GROVE - Officials in Community High School District 99 say they are following the district’s discipline protocol following an incident in which a video captured a female student writing a racial slur on whiteboard.
“Over the weekend, we were made aware of a video circulating on social media of a student writing on a whiteboard using racist terms,” Superintendent Hank Thiele said in a Jan. 14 letter to the District 99 community.
“We are immediately responding by identifying the students involved and contacting their parents,” Thiele said. “A formal investigation into all facts in continuing.”
The letter added that “this type of behavior is unacceptable and is inconsistent with the values we cherish at District 99.”
“We are disappointed that this has happened and apologize for the hurt that it has caused,” Thiele said.
The slur was not written on a whiteboard in a District 99 school, said Jill Browning, the district’s director of communications. Browning could not share additional details regarding the incident.
"Due to student privacy, we cannot share specific consequences that will be issued or the status of the consequences,” Browning said.
