Wheaton residential fire deemed accidental

Investigators believe blaze may have stated in fireplace

WHEATON - A Dec. 10 residential fire in Wheaton that caused significant interior and exterior damage was deemed accidental, according to a Wheaton Fire Department news release.

Firefighters from Wheaton and neighboring communities battled the blaze at the single-family residence in the 600 block of Franklin Street, which was reported at about 11:30 p.m., according to the release. Flames on the exterior of the chimney extended to the interior of the house.

The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes. No one was injured, the release stated.

The fire caused extensive exterior and interior damage. The estimated loss is unavailable, according to the release.

A subsequent investigation deemed that the cause of the fire was accidental and appears to have been associated with the fireplace, the release stated.

The house was deemed unsafe for occupancy and turned over to the property owner after the fire.
