Elderly woman distracted while men burglarize her home

DOWNERS GROVE – Several pieces of jewelry reportedly were stolen from the home of an elderly Downers Grove woman Nov. 23 while she was distracted by a man posing a repairman, according to a Downers Grove Police Department report.

The items stolen included two gold wedding band with diamonds, a pearl ring, a diamond pinkie ring and an oval ring, according to the police report. The incident occurred at about 2:45 p.m. in the 1200 block of Drove Avenue.

The 83-year-old woman said she was doing yard work on the east side of her house when she was approached by a Hispanic man who said he was doing work for a neighbor and wanted her to show him the property line, the report stated.

The man told the victim to walk to the back of her house with him, but she became suspicious and walked to the front of the house instead, according to the report. The man was described as in his 30s with brown hair and a medium build.

When the victim walked to the front of the house, she saw a white, newer model car with three male occupants parked very close to her garage. She was unable to describe them, the report stated.

The woman continued to the kitchen door on the west side of the house and was followed by the man who kept talking to her. She thanked him and closed the door.

When she went inside, she heard people walking around upstairs and asked what they were doing. Two men said they were looking for her husband, walked down the stairs and left the house, the report stated. The woman called 911.
