Downers Grove Park District to welcome autumn with numerous activities

DOWNERS GROVE – Summer is coming to a close, and the Downers Grove Park District is looking ahead to fall with a flurry of activities. Here’s a look at the district’s August and September schedule.

What: Imagine Dance Team Auditions

When: 2 p.m. Aug. 25

Where: Lincoln Center, 935 Maple Ave.

Cost: Free

About: Dancers ages 7 to 16 are invited to develop individual talents and grow as dancers with team rehearsals that work on technique and choreography. Performances and competitions provide opportunities to showcase new skills.

What: Doerhoefer Park Turf Grand Opening

When: 5 to 6 p.m. Aug. 30

Where: Doerhoefer Park, 41st Street and Saratoga Avenue

Cost: Free

About: There will be a grand-opening celebration of the new synthetic turf at Doerhoefer Park. The turf features CoolPlay technology, which is expected to reduce field temperatures by as much as 30 degrees.

What: Field to Fermenter

When: 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 8

Where: Lyman Woods, 901 31st St.

Cost: $55

About: Participants will meet at Alter Brewing Co. and travel to Lyman Woods to learn the history of local beekeeping and the science behind how honey is made. At Lyman Woods, suit up and visit the apiary, harvest honey from the hives and partake in a honey tasting. The experience will then move to Alter Brewing Co. where, after a catered lunch by City Barbeque, the head brewer will give a tour of the facility and explain the basics of brewing followed by a tasting of Alter’s brews, including the limited brew crafted with Lyman Woods honey. Advanced registration is required. This event is for ages 21 and older.

What: "Hearth and Home: The Significance of Downers Grove’s Historic Houses" opening reception

When: 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 8

Where: Downers Grove Museum, 831 Maple Ave.

Cost: Free

About: This program explores the histories of houses built between the 1830s and 1930s and the families who turned them into homes. Meet museum staff who curated the exhibit, and local experts will answer questions about historic home research, recognition programs and preservation. The exhibit is open from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and it will run through Jan. 5, 2019.

What: Movie in the Park featuring “The Incredibles”

When: 8 p.m. Sept. 14

Where: Fishel Park, 1050 Grove St.

Cost: Free

About: Celebrate the start of school with an outdoor showing of “The Incredibles” at Fishel Park. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

What: Group Walk Vegan

When: 8:30 to 10:30 a..m. Sept. 15 and 22

Where: Recreation Center, 4500 Belmont Road

Cost: $8 for fitness members, $12 for residents, $18 for nonresidents

About: Participants will walk 2.4 miles from the Recreation Center as fitness and vegan instructor Carrie Anslow leads the group to the downtown Downers Grove Market where they will learn what to look for to prepare healthy meals with vegan in mind. The group will have 30 minutes to walk the market and buy items. Advanced registration is required. This program is for ages 15 and older.

What: Senior Resource Fair

When: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 20

Where: Lincoln Center, 935 Maple Ave.

Cost: Free

About: Presented by the Downers Grove Park District and state Rep. David Olsen, R-Downers Grove, the Senior Resource Fair will feature informational booths including senior service and assisted living facilities, local hospitals, medical and home health professionals, the Downers Grove Public Library and the State of Illinois Mobile Drivers Unit.

What: Auditions for "Christmas Evie: An Original Christmas Musical"

When: 3 p.m. Sept. 22 and 6 p.m. Sept. 24

Where: Lincoln Center, 935 Maple Ave.

Cost: Free

About: The Downers Grove Park District is seeking actors ages 5 and older to audition for this original Christmas musical about a young girl who learns her sister has been put on Santa’s naughty list. After receiving a letter from Evie, Santa struggles to keep his Christmas spirit and has to make a change in order for the meaning of Christmas to ring true. Performances will be Dec. 8 and 9 at the Lincoln Center. For audition requirements, visit
