DOWNERS GROVE – Some of the community's most appealing gardens will be on display July 14 during the 12th annual Downers Grove Garden Walk.
Participants will have the chance to tour six gardens, each of which offers different combinations of blossoms, shapes and colors. Some of the gardens are the work of the homeowners while others are tended to by professionals.
Proceeds from the walk benefit the Downers Grove United Methodist Church Bridge Board, which helps provide transitional housing for homeless families as a partner with Bridge Communities. The Bridge Board offers mentoring, direction, encouragement and a stable environment so that families can become self-sufficient and sustain their independence, according to the church.
The walk runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the event at the individual gardens.
Marie Clements, co-chairwoman of the event, said the purpose of the walk is to encourage and inspire other gardeners.
"There's always something every year that people take away," Clements said. "It's sharing. We hope people will come away with some ideas."
Walk participants will see a variety of gardens as well, she said.
"There are some that are very formal and manicured and some that are done by the garden owners themselves," Clements said. "They're not all the same. We don't want to do the same thing over and over again."
Tickets can be purchased though July 14 at Anderson's Bookshop, 5112 Main St., Downers Grove; Community Bank of Downers Grove, 1111 Warren Ave., Downers Grove; The Growing Place, 25 Plank Road, Naperville; Phillip's Flowers and Gifts, 528 N. Cass Ave., Westmont; and Downers Grove First United Methodist Church, 1032 Maple Ave., Downers Grove.
