DOWNERS GROVE – The family of a woman allegedly stabbed to death by her son has started a GoFundMe account to raise funds for funeral and relocation expenses.
The family of Patricia James, 51, who allegedly was fatally stabbed Jan. 9 by her son, Kevin James, has raised $8,870 of a $20,000 fundraising goal over the past two months.
Kevin James, a graduate of Downers Grove South High School, was charged with first-degree murder in his mother's death. He is being held in the DuPage County Jail.
“Our brother is struggling with mental illness that our family was unaware of,” the family stated on the GoFundMe page. “Our family was shocked by this horrific tragedy. While our brother was taken into custody and hospitalized, we pray for him.”
The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a family member at 1:38 p.m. Jan. 9 at a residence in the 2100 block of 63rd Street near Downers Grove. The caller said her brother had stabbed their mother inside the home, and he had fled, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. He was arrested outside the home a short time later.
While in his mother’s home, Kevin James, a Naperville resident, allegedly stabbed her multiple times with a kitchen knife, according to a DuPage County State's Attorney's Office news release.
The family described Patricia James as a role model and a loving, devoted mother and wife.
“She expected great things from her four children, supporting us every step of the way,” the GoFundMe page stated. “All four children have been valued students and athletes at O’Neill Middle School. Our youngest sister still attends the middle school. The three older children attended Downers Grove South High School. All of them are outstanding athletes.”
Efforts to reach the family were unsuccessful.
Patricia James was devoted to her church in West Chicago, where she was co-director of a service project designed to help teenagers engage in activities to keep them safe and off the streets, according to the GoFundMe page.
“Our mom had a great relationship with all of us. We are a very close family. We are grieving and miss her,” the family stated on the page. “We are appealing to all who might be able to help us move forward and we greatly appreciate any donation given to us.”
