Letter: Why I suspended campaign

To the editor:

“Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn’t mean politics won’t take an interest in you,” Pericles.

A powerful quote, especially to a self-proclaimed ancient Greece fanatic (see Sinbad and Leonidas, dog names). The fact it comes from the cradle of democracy makes it more relevant.

If we don’t start taking politics more seriously in America, we will go the way of the ancient Greeks.

That’s why I declared my Republican candidacy for the Illinois House of Representatives, District 23, in September. I know that my diverse experience as a police officer, business owner, law student, U.S. Senate staffer, union leader and, most importantly, the proud heir of my father’s legacy all prepared me well. Personally, my dad (U.S.M.C. – retired) died when I was 19, leaving me to fend for myself. When most of my friends were planning their semesters abroad, I was planning his funeral.

These experiences and the attributes that sprung from them give me the strength, patience, perspective and confidence to lead.

When I started this campaign, I saw a clear path to victory. However, my obligations as a police officer, legal education at John Marshall Law School and my businesses have pulled me from that path.

I cannot continue to give full attention to demonstrating that I am the best candidate, so I have suspended my campaign.

I want to especially thank the 1,000-plus residents who signed my petition. I cannot thank you enough for your support and the confidence placed in me. I promise to continue to serve the community. I am taking time to reflect and will announce my next steps soon. I will be back in the fight for our state.

In the meantime, I promise to keep my interest in protecting yours. With deep gratitude,

Daniel J. Szczesny
