LOCKPORT – Kelvin and Milne Grove schools in Lockport joined schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk & Bike to School Day on Oct. 4.
The event began with kids, parents, friends and neighbors walking and riding to school. They were met along the way by “Celebrity Crossing Guards” at the intersections, including state Rep. John Connor D-Lockport, Lockport Chief of Police Terry Lemming and Lockport Township Fire District Deputy Chief Paul Hertzmann.
At Milne Grove School, parents and kids were welcomed into the gym for an assembly focused on childhood physical fitness and facilitated by Dr. Kunchala.
Walk & Bike to School Day events are held by schools throughout the nation each fall. Not only does this event raise awareness of the need to create safe pedestrian friendly routes, but it also underscores the importance of childhood health and physical fitness, environmental awareness and relief of traffic congestion.
