Former Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company Chief Stu Stone died Feb. 4 after a prolonged illness.

GLEN ELLYN – The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company on Feb. 4 announced the death of former Chief Stu Stone after a prolonged illness.

He joined the fire company at the age of 21 on July 12, 1963, and served for more than 53 years until his death Feb. 4, according to a news release from the company.

Stone was elected chief of the fire company in April 1978, and he remained in that position until April 2001, according to the release. Since then, he remained involved in all aspects of the fire company, offering the guidance and wisdom gained from his more than 50 years in the fire service, the release stated.

Stone also was the former publisher of the Glen Ellyn News, now the Glen Ellyn Suburban Life.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Feb. 9 and 3 to 9 p.m. Feb. 10 at Leonard Memorial Home, 565 Duane St., Glen Ellyn. Funeral service will be Feb. 11, time and place pending.
