A 2003 Wheaton Warrenville South High School graduate is being remembered for his kind nature after being found shot to death Jan. 7 in a vehicle on Chicago's Near West Side.
Jason "Jay" Goodfriend, 31, of Chicago, was the finance and operations manager at Chicago Tech Academy High School. An autopsy found he died from a gunshot wound to his head, and his death has been ruled a homicide.
"Jay has touched the lives of many people, and will forever be remembered as a genuine, honest and sincere gentleman," friend Kaloyan Slavchev wrote as part of a GoFundMe campaign she started on behalf of Goodfriend's family. "He has made memorable impressions to not only those who have known him forever, but those who he had only briefly spoken to. Another innocent soul is taken way too soon."
The GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $12,000.
While attending Wheaton Warrenville South, Goodfriend was active in the school's music programs.
A memorial visitation for Goodfriend will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 21 at Thompson & Kuenster Funeral Home, 5570 95th St., Oak Lawn. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Chicago Tech Academy Music Program, 1301 W. 14th St., Chicago, IL 60608, or at www.chitech.org/makemusic.
