Downers Grove therapy center using arts to heal

DOWNERS GROVE – Azizi Marshall originally wanted to be a performer, but today she uses her talent to help people.

Marshall is the founder and CEO of Creative Clinical Consulting LLC, which has a creative arts therapy center in Downers Grove.

Her parents were both trained psychodramatists. Her mother was a social worker and her father was a counselor, which pushed her away from the industry, she said.

"I kind of grew up in that environment and wanted never to do it," she said.

Her father died when she was 21, and Marshall decided she wanted to make a change in her career. She discovered she was far more fulfilled by helping others with art.

"Creative arts therapy really lends itself to people who go through trauma because there's a disconnect in the brain," she said.

Art, she added, helps to bridge that gap and help people cope.

The Center for Creative Arts Therapy, which is located at 1431 Opus Place, Suite 110, offers four forms of therapy: Music, art, dance movement and drama therapy. Marshall said her center is the only one of its kind in DuPage County that offers all four art forms.

"What we're seeing a lot of are children, teenagers and women," she said.

Marshall said some of the ways the arts are used for therapy include drawing as a means of releasing anger, acting out potential career paths or playing music to remember a family member who has died.

Marshall said the center provides personalized treatment plans and arts-based workshops at flexible times.

"No other counseling center has made this kind of commitment to healing communities through the arts, which is a natural extension of ourselves," said Jennifer Phillips, executive administrator for the center, in a center news release.

The therapy center opened at its current location in January.
