ELMHURST – The Illinois House approved a bill sponsored by state Rep. Dennis Reboletti, R-Elmhurst, that will allow a pilot program for convicts to receive substance abuse treatment in DuPage County.

The pilot program would create a secure facility with on-site substance abuse treatment in DuPage County, Cook County and a third location to be determined. These facilities will serve as a "last chance" option for individuals convicted of drug or property crimes to serve their sentences in a treatment-intensive environment, according to a news release from Reboletti's office.

Under the legislation, only people convicted of simple drug possession and nonviolent property crimes will be eligible for the program. After a court recommends the program, potential participants will undergo a full analysis and the Department of Corrections will determine each person's eligibility, stated the release.

House Bill 5766 was approved by a 81 to 20 vote April 10. It's first reading in the Illinois Senate is scheduled for April 29.
