William F. Murphy, 33, a Schaumburg lawyer, was sentenced Monday to 30 days in the DuPage County Jail after pleading guilty to one count of indecent solicitation of a child, a Class 3 felony, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney Joseph Birkett.
On June 7, 2006, Murphy, son of Woodridge mayor William Murphy, was arrested by the Winfield Police Department with the assistance of the attorney general’s Internet Crimes Against Children task force, when he traveled to Winfield in an attempt to have sex with a minor he met through an Internet chat room, according to a press release from Birkett’s office. The minor was actually a Winfield police officer.
Winfield Deputy Chief of Police Joe Grimaldi said the arrest culminated a 54-day investigation in which four Winfield officers, one officer from the Wheaton Police Department and four from the Illinois attorney general’s office participated.
“Last year,” Birkett stated in the release, “William Murphy attempted to make a victim out of a minor he met through an Internet chat room. Through online conversations, he gained his victim’s trust and after doing so, on June 7 of last year, William Murphy made the drive from Schaumburg to Winfield to have sex with his victim.
“While we would have hoped for a more significant jail sentence, perhaps 30 days behind bars will be long enough to keep Mr. Murphy from ever making another such drive in the future,” Birkett stated. “Thankfully, Mr. Murphy was caught before he could cause any harm. This case is yet another reminder that we must be vigilant in protecting our children from the possible dangers that lurk on the Internet.”
In addition to his jail sentence, Murphy also was ordered to serve 30 months sex offender probation, register as a sex offender, submit a DNA sample for entry into the state’s sex offender DHA database, and pay court fees and court costs, according to Birkett.
