For the first time, the Jirani Children’s Choir of Kenya is traveling to the United States for a concert series. It includes a performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at the Pheasant Run Mega Center, 4051 E. Main St., St. Charles.
Tickets – $20, $10 for youth ages 6 to 18 – are available at local United Methodist churches or can be purchased at the door.
Local church members will be welcoming choir members into their homes for three nights following the performance.
“We are honored to be able to host these children and to bring their gift of song to area residents,” said the Rev. Rolla Swanson of Batavia United Methodist Church. “It is a song of hope that will touch everyone who hears it.”
In Dec. 2005, the Rev. Tae Jong Rim of Nairobi, Kenya, witnessed an abandoned child looking for food in a garbage dump, and the experience spurred him to action. He was convinced that children growing up in Kenya’s Korogocho-Dandora slum needed both hope and a future — and he was certain music was the answer. In response, he started the Jirani Children’s Choir, recruiting internationally known musician Jae Chang Kim as conductor and artistic director.
