Accomplishments

• The following students have been awarded a Presidential Scholarship at Drake University beginning in the fall 2007 semester. The Presidential Scholarship is awarded on the basis of the student’s academic and leadership achievement and ranges from $7,000 to $12,000.

• Jessica Sabbah of Bolingbrook and Thomas Ferrin of Naperville were awarded Certificates of Academic Excellence by Northern Illinois University’s Academic Advising Center for their achievement during the spring 2007 semester.

• Kari Chesney of Woodridge and Simone Runyon of Naperville are two of only 29 new freshmen to be named a Presidential Scholar at Illinois State University. The highest award made to incoming students, a Presidential Scholarship provides $8,000 each year, totaling $32,000. Recipients study abroad one term, complete a 130-hour service learning project in a community setting, complete a special set of general education courses and fulfill Honors Program requirements.

• Melissa Kenney, a senior nursing major at Elmhurst College from Woodridge, is a recipient of the Chartwells Scholarship for the 2006-07 academic year. The annually funded scholarship, established in 2001, is provided as a gift from the Chartwells/Levy Restaurant Group.

• Jacqueline Hall, a senior nursing major at Elmhurst College from Naperville, is the recipient of the Grace Berg Schaible Scholarship for the 2006-07 academic year. Hall is a graduate of Waubonsie Valley High School. She is a member of Alpha Phi sorority and the Council for Exceptional Children. She also plays on the women’s softball team.

• Andrea Field, of Naperville, received the College’s National Society Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America Award at the North Central College honors convocation in May. Field graduated from North Central College with a major in history.

• Morgan Carey, of Naperville, received the College’s Outstanding Major in Modern and Classical Languages Award at the North Central College honors convocation in May. Carey graduated from North Central College with a double major in English writing and French.

• Lauren Davies, of Naperville, received the College’s Diane Duvigneaud Senior Art Award at the North Central College honors convocation in May. Davies graduated from North Central College with a major in art education. She was a featured artist in two separate exhibits at North Central College this year. She displayed her pieces of mixed-media, including pencil, acrylic on canvas and scratchboard, in a joint exhibit titled “Metamorphoses” in March and in the Senior Art Exhibit in May at the Oesterle Library Gallery.

• Alexandria Rios, of Naperville, received the College’s Carleen Verstraete Outstanding Resident Student Award at the North Central College honors convocation in May. Rios graduated from North Central College with a double major in Spanish and organizational communication.

• Aaron Hankin, of Naperville, received the College’s Outstanding Major in Physics Award at the North Central College honors convocation in May. Hankin graduated from North Central College with a major in physics.

• Sandra Marchetti, of Naperville, received the College’s Outstanding Major in Writing Award at the North Central College honors convocation in May. Marchetti graduated from North Central College with a double major in English writing and history.

• Bethany Stark, of Bolingbrook, received the College’s Outstanding Major in Biochemistry Award at the North Central College honors convocation in May. Stark graduated from North Central College with a major in biochemistry.

• Joseph Balkwill, Michael Gross, Sidra Hamidi, and Stephanie Ryding, of Naperville, have been inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta, the national honor society for freshmen, at North Central College. Alpha Lambda Delta encourages academic achievement and helps students develop goals and high standards of learning. To qualify for membership, students must be in the top ten percent of their class.

• Six young adults received scholarships from The First United Methodist Church of Downers Grove on Aug. 5. These scholarships are awarded annually to students attending college. 

The Marge Lee Scholarship: Emily Hudson, a senior at Indiana University majoring in Political Science, and Andrea Simnick, a sophomore at The University of Illinois majoring in Speech Communication. 

The Stewart Conger Scholarship: Kelly Hires, a junior at DePaul University majoring in Theatre Arts and Adam Tanguay, a sophomore at Northwestern University majoring in Radio, Television and Film. 

Mary Ann Brader Scholarship: Jennifer Schramm, a junior at Lewis University majoring in Elementary Education, and Lauren Dortwegt, a sophomore at Lipscomb University majoring in Elementary Education.
