DeKALB – Montini was playing for a fifth straight state title and the first undefeated season in program history, but Sacred Heart-Griffiin's defense snuffed that out. SHG won 38-28 on Saturday at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.
Willowbrook junior Kelly McNamara was second in the 100-yard butterfly at state on Saturday. McNamara, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports reporter Dan Santaromita about taking a medal home from the state meet.
LOMBARD – The contrast from a year ago is sharp at Glenbard East, but the talent is still there. The Rams lost four starters from last year’s conference and regional champion squad. Three players from that group are playing in college and a young core is in their place.
ADDISON – Once last season ended, Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons was already excited for this time of year. At the time he said this group of Blazers has the most returning talent he’s ever had. Now it’s time to see how many wins that can translate to.
LOMBARD – Montini is one win away from its first ever undefeated season. The Broncos beat Sycamore 42-20 in a Class 5A state semifinal Saturday afternoon in Lombard to make a fifth straight trip to the state final.
Kelly McNamara claimed a second place medal in the IHSA state meet at New Trier on Saturday. The Willowbrook junior was the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.11 seconds. McNamara finished behind only Fenwick’s Texas-bound Mimi Schneider.
LOMBARD – The Broncos had a breakout season last year, but fell just short of the Suburban Christian Gold title. Matching that success will be tough this year with the departure of all-conference forward Simmie Cobbs.
VILLA PARK – A lot of new faces are in the Willowbrook program this year. The top three leading scorers from last year, Josh Joiner, Tiger Greene and Yashua Trent, are all gone, with the trio playing in junior college this year.
LOMBARD – Montini is now one win away from its first ever undefeated season. The Broncos beat Sycamore 42-20 in a Class 5A state semifinal Saturday afternoon in Lombard and will face Sacred Heart-Griffin in the 5A final.
LOMBARD – To win four state titles in a row and be on track to for a fifth, some luck is required to go along with the necessary talent and skill. In Saturday’s quarterfinal against Joliet Catholic, Montini’s Stephen Dennis was the beneficiary of an unusual, maybe even lucky, play to help the Broncos’ push for a fifth straight state title remain intact.
LOMBARD – For the first time since 2009, Montini’s girls basketball team enters the season without a state title to defend. Still, a 35-2 season that ended with a third place trophy is nothing to be disappointed about. Montini brings plenty back from that team.
LOMBARD – After winning just three games last year, Glenbard East’s girls basketball team needed an infusion of new talent. They got it. The Rams have five sophomores on the varsity roster, all of which should play. Four of those were part of a freshmen team that went 25-1 last year.
VILLA PARK – If the season opener is any indication, Molly Krawczykowski could be in for a big year. Willowbrook’s senior guard scored 20 points in the Warriors’ 63-43 win over Glenbard North on Tuesday. Krawczykowski looks in line to lead a team hoping to improve on a 22-win season.
ADDISON – Watching Addison Trail girls basketball this season could feel somewhat like hockey since the Blazers will have so many players going in and out. AT coach Rob Schader says the Blazers will play 12 girls on a regular basis and will try to use that depth to their advantage.
DOWNERS GROVE – Three individuals and two relays from York’s girls swimming and diving team qualified for state out of the Downers Grove North sectional on Saturday. The Dukes were third as a team at the sectional.
