Wheaton car crash leaves West Chicago man dead

An 81-year-old West Chicago man died early this morning after a two-vehicle crash in unincorporated Wheaton, according to the DuPage County Coroner's Office.

Thomas Tinnes, of West Chicago, was pronounced dead at 1:49 a.m. today at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, according to the Coroner's Office.

The collision occurred at about 8:40 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Butterfield Road and Arrowhead Drive, according to the DuPage County Sheriff's Office.

Bryan Hancock, 23, of Warrenville, was driving a 2004 Dodge Dakota east on Butterfield Road approaching Arrowhead Drive when Tinnes attempted to turn onto westbound Butterfield Road in a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis, according to county officials. Tinnes' car was struck on the driver's side by the front end of Hancock's pickup, according sheriff's officers.

Tinnes was taken to CDH, where he later died from injuries suffered in the crash.

Butterfield Road was closed from Herrick to Orchard roads for about three hours as sheriff’s investigators looked into the crash.

The accident still is under investigation. No citations or arrests have been made as of this afternoon.
