Bensenville, IL -

Bensenville is set to join other communities in DuPage County by using video cameras to make sure motorists are following traffic laws.

The village is working with the vendor RedSpeed Illinois, and has installed cameras at one of its major intersections that will record drivers who violate red-light laws as part of a traffic initiative called the Bensenville Police Red Light Enforcement Program.

Cameras have been installed at Route 83 and Grove Avenue.

The village is putting the finishing touches on camera installation and will enter a 15-day warning period before issuing fines, village spokeswoman Linda Dickson said. The warning period is required under state law, since the Illinois General Assembly approved using the cameras a couple of years ago.

The village has not decided when that 15-day grace period begins and ends, but Dickson said ticketing could begin by the end of the month.

“We chose this particular intersection because of the high traffic counts and its location to schools and parks,” she said.

The intersection is close to Fenton High School and the Bensenville Park District’s Deer Grove Leisure Center.

Under the program, cameras are owned and operated by RedSpeed Illinois, based in Lombard.

Citations will be issued to motorists who drive through red lights without stopping or fail to come to a complete stop before turning right on red when safe to do so, Dickson said.

When cameras record a possible violation, it is first viewed by RedSpeed, then sent to the police department, which will have an officer check the footage for a violation and decide if a ticket is warranted. Tickets are $100, and are sent to the registered owner of the vehicle, along with a picture of the vehicle taken by the camera, and an Internet link to view the video recording of the incident. Citations can be contested in a public hearing.

Communities not only benefit by making intersections safer, but see it as a revenue enhancer, as the fines issued go back to the municipality where they are issued, meaning the system is fully self-sufficient, said Debra Beerup, marketing director for RedSpeed Illinois.

Bensenville is the latest DuPage County municipality to implement cameras to enforce traffic laws. Roselle began using cameras last month; and Addison and Carol Stream will be installing them later this year.
