Geneva, IL -

A severe storm blew through the Chicago area last night, taking down trees and power lines, and bringing heavy rains and wind to the region.

About 2,700 people were without power for more than an hour last night in Geneva.

Mike Buffington, Geneva superintendent of electrical services, said the power went out around 7:20 p.m. Aug. 4.

“We were on the phone immediately to ComEd,” he said.

The power was back in about 87 minutes later.

A tornado warning forced those attending the City Council meeting to head to the basement for about 20 minutes until they were given the all-clear to resume the meeting.

In Batavia, there were 20 storm-related incidents including downed power lines and lightning strikes to structures.

A downed wire caused a barn fire at 2S461 Bliss Road in Batavia. More than 50 fire personnel responded. Damage is estimated at $60,000.

Portions of the roof were torn off last night at St. Charles North High School as severe weather passed through the area. Roof debris, light poles, tree branches and even a crushed portable toilet littered the school grounds this morning. The inside of the school was reported to also have some damage.
