REGIONAL KICKOFF Friday
OUTLOOK Glenbard West competes in one of the state’s tougher Class 3A sectionals.
The Hilltoppers (10-6-2 as of May 11) are the No. 10 seed and face regional host Wheaton North in a regional semifinal at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Falcons edged Glenbard West 2-1 back in April.
The winner will likely face No. 2 seed Conant for the regional title at 6 p.m. Friday, May 22.
Lauren Davis has been the top offensive threat for the Hilltoppers with 13 goals, while Molly Abromitis (seven goals), Quinn Refer (seven goals), Katie Watt (four) and Kristin Papierski (four) are more threats in a balanced attack.
The Hilltoppers have also posted six shutouts and given up just 20 goals in 18 games.
Wheaton North, which started off the season 7-2-2, drew just the No. 8 seed, showing the sectional’s depth.
The Falcons, gunning for their fourth straight sectional final, are led by seniors Sarah Carlson and Annie Torppey and juniors Erin Karner and Paige Fowler.
A rugged DuPage Valley Conference slate contributed to West Chicago being dealt a No. 14 seed, but the Wildcats (who host No. 18 Elgin at 6:30 p.m. Friday) have been riding the hot foot of Meagan Radloff to a strong regular-season finish.
Radloff has scored five goals in her last three games and West Chicago has won four of its last six to improve to 8-7-2 overall. A win pits the Wildcats against No. 2 seed Conant at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wheaton North.

REGIONAL KICKOFF Friday
OUTLOOK The state semifinals will likely have less talent than the four teams left here.
Two-time defending state champ Waubonsie Valley is the No. 4 seed, showing the depth and strength of the sectional as the soccer-rich Naperville area has four formidable teams in the top spots.
“In this sectional right from the first-round game of regionals it’s not going to be easy,” said Downers South coach Barry Jacobson. “It’s 11 or 12 deep of good teams. Everyone is opening with a tough game.”
Wheaton Warrenville South (10-5-1) drew the No. 5 seed but has lost its last three games by a total of four goals.
The Tigers, led by Lexi Petersen (nine goals, four assists), kick off the postseason Tuesday at the Waubonsie Valley regional with a matchup against No. 12 seed Batavia, whom the Tigers beat 3-1 in late March. A victory this time sends WWS to the regional final on Friday, May 22, likely against either Waubonsie Valley.
“The sectional is loaded,” said Tigers coach Guy Callipari. “It is neither a shame, just something that has been handed to us and we have to be prepared for it. We can sit here and argue about it but that doesn’t sit as well as preparing for it. We definitely want to be competitive and do our best and represent.”

REGIONAL KICKOFF Monday
OUTLOOK Wheaton Academy has all-stater Leah Fortune back in the lineup as the postseason nears, making the Warriors a top contender for the Class 2A state title.
Fortune, who’s heading to the University of Texas, scored two goals in an impressive 4-1 win Monday over Wheaton North, opening the scoring off an assist from freshman Sydney Sharkey. Alexa Sharkey and Crystal Thomas scored the other two goals for Wheaton Academy (13-3-1) and Alicia Witt had two assists.
While the Warriors host the sectional, they first have to pass two road tests. Playing at the Trinity regional in River Forest, Wheaton Academy faces Noble Street Charter School/Rauner at 5 p.m. Monday and either Trinity or Guerin in the regional final at noon on Saturday, May 23.
St. Francis’ strong mix of upperclassmen and freshmen earned it the sectional’s No. 2 seed. The Spartans open play at 7 p.m. Monday at West Chicago against Chicago’s Noble Street Charter School/Pritzker, with Glenbard South or Fenton in the regional finals on May 23.
After going winless through its first seven matches, Glenbard South has turned the corner, winning its third straight (and sixth in last seven) on Monday in a 4-0 win over Kaneland.
Playing in Class 2A of the first year of the three-class system, the Raiders earned the sectional’s No. 7 seed and open against No. 10 Fenton at 7 p.m. Tuesday. A win likely put thems against St. Francis for the regional title at 11 a.m. May 23. The regional semifinals and final will be played at West Chicago High School.
Danielle Warner has led the offensive charge this season, while Meghan Pipal in another threat in the middle of the field. Amanda Yam, who had 10 saves in a 1-1 tie with Geneva and four more in the shutout over DeKalb, has been solid all season.
