Sometimes it is difficult for Winfield residents to make it over to the Chamber of Commerce’s farmers market Wednesdays, or they simply run out of time.
A new service brings the market to the shoppers. The chamber will take fresh produce orders by e-mail for items from Illinois and Michigan farmers.
Available will be corn at $5 a dozen; Red Haven peaches at $4 a quart and $6 a bin; string beans at $3 a pound or two pounds for $5; tomatoes at $2; red raspberries and blackberries at $4; and Athena cantaloupe at $3.
The actual market is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays in the Prairie Trail Shopping Center at County Farm and Geneva roads.

Replacement search
The Winfield Public Library Board of Trustees has been seeking a replacement for a board vacancy, after the resignation of Linda McNamara because of a family move to Ohio.
Trustees expect to name a replacement at their meeting this month. The newly appointed trustee will serve the remainder of McNamara’s term until spring. If he or she decides to run for election in April, it will be for a four-year term ending in 2013, said Matthew Suddarth, library director.
New member
A new member was welcomed to the Winfield Chamber: Selsor’s Pumping Service Inc., owned by Susan Oury. Mike Oury will appear as Darth Vader on a motorcycle in the Good Old Days parade next month.
Parade route
Winfield’s Good Old Days parade begins at 1:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at Sunnyside and Forest streets. It will move east to Winfield Road, make a turn north on Winfield Road and continue to Beecher Street, make a left turn for one block and disperse at Beecher and Park streets. Participation is free to all chamber members and nonprofit organizations, with a $50 fee for nonmembers. Cindy Keck chairs the parade.
Fest finalizing
Organizations and clubs recently gathered to plan the 40th Good Old Days celebration from Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 4 to 7.
Several groups were represented: Boy Scout Troop 575, Winfield Historical Society, Winfield Community Bank, Winfield Fire Department and Winfield Lions Club. Resident Nick Power volunteered to chair the fest’s newest event, the Armchair Quarterback passing contest.
The chamber’s executive director, Rich Bysina, and his son, Jay, made a quick run-through of the contest at the southeast corner of Beecher and Church streets. This will be the actual competition site Friday, Sept. 5.
Bysina has been busy compiling a final version of the Good Old Days schedule of events, updating it as members make revisions.

Paternal grandparents are Merce and Don Weber of Douglas, Mich.
Garden party
Winfield United hosted its first Garden Sculpture party, a smashing success. That was no surprise to the Sculpture Garden Production Committee. Members accomplished all their assignments with creative and thoughtful details to put visitors in a gala mood.
Attention was paid to everything from artwork, lights and lanterns to choice of music, a mosaic of ice cream toppings, fancy-hatted servers, an ice cream emporium and well-placed tables and chairs.
WU hosted the event for the benefit of its political committee, which will support WU’s continued success in promoting well-qualified candidates for positions in local government.
