A fire at a Burr Oak Road apartment complex Sunday, Aug. 17 night charred the 24 units, displacing the 107 occupants, fire officials said.
The fire was reported at 8:52 p.m. in the 800 block of Burr Oak Road in West Chicago. Fourteen fire departments aided in fighting the three-alarm blaze, which called for about 80 firefighters.
The Red Cross set up a shelter in the apartment complex’s recreation room for displaced residents who did not have another place to stay Sunday night. Seventeen people slept there, a Red Cross spokeswoman said.
By Monday, Aug. 18, afternoon 39 residents had come to the shelter to get clothes or other crucial amenities lost in the blaze. The spokeswoman said it was not clear yet whether the shelter will house residents again Monday night.
