In honor of the Kane County Bar Association’s 150th anniversary, the organization has teamed with the new Geneva theater group to perform the historic legal drama “Inherit the Wind” at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18.
The play is a fictionalized account of the 1925 Scopes Monkey trial, which resulted in John T. Scopes’ conviction for teaching Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution to a high school science class, contrary to a Tennessee state law that prohibited the teaching of anything besides creationism.
The performances will be held in the downtown Kane County Courthouse on South Third Street in Geneva. Tickets cost $20.
The KCBA and its foundation provide a variety of legal services to the community, as well as offer mock trials for high school students and provide scholarships.
The drama will be produced by Geneva Underground Playhouse, formerly First Street Playhouse in Batavia, which is relocating to 524 State St.
“Our partnership with the association has been fantastic,” said Eric Schwartz, the troupe’s executive director. “It’s allowed the theater to jump right into the community, even before our theater opens.”
