To help mark the Egyptian Theatre’s 80th anniversary later this year, the theater’s art gallery features new architectural photos of the theater by Beryl MacLachlan of Batavia, with a reception planned this month. Many of the photos will be featured in the theater’s 80th anniversary 13-month calendar available later this year.
MacLachlan’s first exhibit last spring proved so successful that she returned this month with an array of nature, industrial and mechanical photos, as well as the featured theater photos. Her photographic goal, most often, is to “show an unexpected side of what people often see as ordinary.”
“The theater provides many good photographic subjects,” MacLachlan said. “The decorations give a very strong feeling of the 1920s. It’s ancient Egyptian inspired, but it’s very 1920s Egyptian. Even the exit signs have a 1920s look. The lighting inside the building is very dramatic, so photographs have exciting contrasts of light and shadow. Also, the theater has kept some of its old movie technology. The projection booth still has the huge old carbon arc projectors. I can give people a look at those — things they normally never get to see.”
There will be an artist’s reception open to the public from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, April 26, in the theater’s art gallery just prior to the performance of “Annie Junior” by Dreamer’s Theater Group. Framed and unframed photos will be for sale.
