The Elgin Choral Union’s spring fundraiser will be “High Tea” in the Rainbow Room at the landmark Hotel Baker in St. Charles. Held as part of the town’s annual Sisters Weekend, the event will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 25.
The traditional English-style high tea will feature three courses of delicate cakes, cookies, finger sandwiches and other treats, all set to the serenade of renowned tenor and Choral Union member Oscar Menoyo. Tickets for the fundraiser cost $50 per person, with 100 percent of the net proceeds benefiting the Elgin Choral Union. The event also features a silent auction and a dollar raffle with a guaranteed prize of $2,000.
“We are so excited about being a part of Sisters Weekend in St. Charles,” said Karen Hattan, an Elgin Choral Union board member and the event’s chairperson. “Many of our members come from St. Charles, and we were thrilled to be able to offer this event at the historic Hotel Baker. We’re encouraging all the women out there to wear your best Easter bonnet to the tea, and bring your spouses as well. After all, it’s for a great cause, and everyone partakes in tea time in England.”
Directed by Maestro Andrew Lewis, The Elgin Choral Union is a self-sustaining nonprofit that has been presenting choral music to the region for more than 60 years, often performing with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra. On May 9, the group will present Mendelssohn’s St. Paul Oratorio, a rarely performed work illuminating the conversion and life’s work of the Apostle Paul. Members and audiences are drawn from across the region. Organized in 1947, the Elgin Choral Union is the oldest and largest performing arts organization in the Fox Valley. The 115-volunteer members of the ensemble range in age from 18 to 80 and reside in more than 30 communities.
The historic Hotel Baker was built in 1928 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During its heydey, the Rainbow Room featured many famous entertainers of the 1940s and 1950s, including Tommy Dorsey, Guy Lombardo, Louis Armstrong and Lawrence Welk. The Hotel Baker also welcomed guests such as John F. Kennedy, Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, Gerald Ford, Illinois Governors Adlai Stevenson and Jim Thompson, and Senators Charles Percy, Everett Dirksen and Edmund Muskie, as well as entertainers Jeanette MacDonald, Mary Martin, Eddie Arnold, Edgar Bergen and evangelist Billy Graham.
