Wheaton, IL - St. Charles North sweeper Hayley Nothnagel had a simple answer for what has helped the North Stars earn their seventh consecutive shutout on May 22.
“We just don’t want teams to get shots on,” Nothnagel said.
In a 2-0 North Stars win over Wheaton North that gave them their first Class AA sectional title since 2004, St. Charles North held the host Falcons to only two shots on net for the day.
The North Stars (18-5) got a goal in each half from Alex Messacar and Maggie Hamilton as goalkeeper Vicki Traven earned the shutout for a big, physical, and skilled team that has yet to give up a goal through four post-season games.
“We’re communicating really well, telling each other who to mark up on, and Vicki does a great job of communicating with us.”
“They’re a strong team, and I think they dominated us physically,” said Falcons senior Michelle Scandora. “They pushed us around on the ball.”
The Falcons’ season ended at 18-3-2 in their third consecutive trip to a sectional final.
The loss also ended the high school careers of a group of Falcons that have been instrumental in lifting Wheaton North’s program into elite status in the state. The Falcons squad that placed third in Illinois two years ago was loaded with solid sophomores, and those sophomores grew into seniors that led the charge.
“I think an attitude change takes a team from being a good team to being a great team,” Scandora said. “Coming into our freshmen and sophomore years, we had that attitude, and it changed the program.”
“Michelle came in as a freshman with the pride to take this team to the next level,” McEvilly said. “And she maintained that commitment to excellence for four years.”
DePaul-bound midfielder Scandora exits the program with 48 goals and 23 assists for her career. Teammate and Wheaton College-bound Jaime Orewiler was one of the most dangerous forwards in Illinois for the past three seasons, and her 18 goals and 11 assists this year give her 70 goals and 39 assists for her career.
“Jaime Orewiler is the best player I’ve ever seen play at the high school level,” McEvilly said. “She’s an extraordinary athlete. She has as big an impact on the game as anybody I’ve seen.”
Senior goalkeeper Hannah Perry started 60 games for the Falcons in her career, posted a .55 goals-against average this year, and leaves with a career goals-against average of .80.
Allie Cerone gave McEvilly 17 goals and 20 assists in her career, while Brittany Sorensen posted 10 goals and 10 assists.
Seniors Meredith Chase, Erin Strom, Jesse Smith, and Kristen Perrine also have played rock-solid soccer for the Falcons, and Laura Dieter was a key player in 2006 before struggling through injuries the past two seasons.
“As a coach, you get a group like this maybe once every 20 years,” McEvilly said.
