Having recognized World War II and Korean War veterans the previous two years, the DuPage County Historical Museum will honor Vietnam veterans Thursday during its third annual DuPage County Salute to Veterans.
The event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. at the museum, 102 E. Wesley St., Wheaton. It corresponds with the 25th anniversary of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, which is Nov. 13.
WIND-AM 560’s Cisco Cotto will host the event, which will feature a performance by singer and guitarist Joe Cantafio, who has performed for American troops around the world.
Veronica Porter, president of the DuPage County Historical Museum Association, said that in addition to being chronologically the next group of veterans to honor, she thought it was important to honor Vietnam veterans because of the reception many received when they came home from the war.
“I always though it was really wrong that we never thanked them,” she said. “They fought the war over there, then they had to come home and fight the war over here. This is a way to give them the thank you they never got when they came home.”
The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served, and there will be photographs on display from the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum.
