Graduation decimated the Mustangs’ squad that qualified for sectionals in Caldwell’s first season as coach. Of the team’s seven runners in the 2007 postseason, Schieve is the lone returnee. He was 45th individually at regionals and the team’s No. 5 finisher at sectionals (98th).
The new-look Downers South squad retains pretty good depth behind Schieve, who took 18th individually in the Mustangs’ first invite of the season Sept. 6 at Lyons Township (where Downers South placed seventh). Lester (26th), Castillo (31st), Zidarich, Enke and Bernard had a 38-second split between them, including 14 seconds between the top two in that pack. Joe Johnson is another likely impact newcomer for the Mustangs after being their No. 7 finisher at LT.
