Host Downers Grove South’s defense put the brakes on Addison Trail’s red-hot running game en route to a 35-0 win Friday.

Coming off a win over Willowbrook in which the Blazers’ Mike D’Ambrose and Frank Cervantes combined for 472 yards rushing between them, Downers South (5-2, 4-0 in the WSC Gold) held Addison Trail (2-5, 2-2)  to just 76 yards on the ground all night — including a mere 19 rushing yards over the first 19:16 of the game.

“They got some yards here or there, but nothing like they had last week,” Downers South coach John Belskis said. “They’re two very good running backs, and it was a tremendous effort by our entire defense.

“I don’t know if we have kids that run as fast as those two, but we never let them pop any (long runs) where we had to chase them down. It was a great scheme by Mark Molinari our defensive coordinator.”

Downers South’s own talented offensive players proved impossible to hold in check. Running back Scottie Williams (165 yards on 14 carries) scored on two touchdown runs, including an eight-yard scoring dash with 8:41 left in the first quarter that put the Mustangs ahead for good.

Quarterback Chandler Whitmer scored on a 16-yard run later in the quarter and completed 9-of-14 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. The junior completed 6 of his last 7 throws, beginning with his 22-yard TD to Wes Manzer in the second quarter.
