Often featuring all underclassmen on the court, Downers Grove North’s rapidly emerging volleyball team gave Hinsdale Central all it could handle Tuesday.
The Trojans dominated the first set with an 18-8 closing run, and stayed toe-to-toe with the Red Devils until late in each of the final two sets before Hinsdale Central emerged with a 15-25, 25-18, 25-18 win.
Sarah Eggert’s run of six straight service points in the first set helped build a 13-7 lead. Freshmen figured prominently in that surge, as Taylor Kasal had a kill to put the Trojans up 9-7 and Jessie Tulacka had two kills and a block on three consecutive points.
Alexa Loufman later reeled off four serves in a row as Downers North built a 19-10 lead. Back-to-back kills by Britta Baarstad upped the lead to 21-11, and a Kasal kill and a Red Devils’ service error produced points 24 and 25 for the Trojans.
Baarstad’s play in the final two sets kept Hinsdale Central from seizing control. With her team down 15-12 in the second set, Baarstad had a consecutive kill and service ace to cut the deficit to one point. A great block by Tulacka kept the Trojans within 18-17 before Hinsdale Central went on a 6-0 run to pull away.
The deciding third set was equally close halfway through, as Baarstad smashed kills to bring the Trojans within 10-8 and 11-9. But a Downers North hitting error was followed by four straight Red Devil service points as the Trojan deficit widened to 16-9.
