As the golf saying goes, you drive for show but putt for dough.
And while there was no money on the line at Tuesday's Class 1A Driscoll boys golf regional, Westmont's Jake Lechelt certainly took that saying to a whole new level.
The junior had just 26 putts en route to firing a 76 at Glendale Lakes Golf Club, the third best score overall, to earn a spot at Monday's Byron sectional at Prairie View.
"I put my driver in play off the tee and I hit a couple of irons in real close," Lechelt said.
While his driving was accurate and his iron play solid, it was his 26 putts (an average of 1.4 per hole) that got the job done and got him out of trouble on the occasions it found him.
"I ran into a little bit of trouble on the back nine, but I settled down," Lechelt said.
Lechelt's 76 was the second best score among individual qualifiers behind the 70 Timothy Christian's Andrew Woodhull shot.
Unfortunately for the Sentinels, Lechelt's score didn't lead to a team sectional berth. They finished eighth overall with a score of 368. Latin School of Chicago (328) and North Shore Country Day (334) took the team berths.
Dan Lubeck and Brian Doherty each shot a 94 and Tyler Serrat had a 104 to round out Westmont's top four. Eric Thompson (109) and Ricky Kokoska (122) also played for Westmont.
