Map quest: Kacie Court residents face existential quandary

Rose Keck and her children, Stephanie and Ryan, have lived on Kacie Court since the subdivision was constructed in 2001, but the street still is not updated on most online mapping sites. The oversight complicates simple tasks like ordering a pizza or getting a package delivered for area residents. Keck alerted the village involved in their quest to get Kacie Court on the map.

Westmont, IL -

Ever wonder what it is like to not exist? The residents of Kacie Court have a pretty good idea.

The street near 67th Street and Cass Avenue has been unlisted on all major map sites such as Google, Mapquest and even the residents’ own global positioning systems since it was built in 2001, causing residents a myriad of headaches.

When Rose Keck’s daughter was born seven years ago, she was inundated with baby gifts, cards and phone calls ... from delivery services.

“I was getting calls left and right — UPS, FedEx. No one could find us. It was happening daily,” she said.

Keck said residents have learned to deal with the problem in different ways. When sending packages, some people will write out directions to their house in addition to the address. Most residents are accustomed to arguing with delivery companies who assure them they do not need direction, she added.

Keck’s neighbor Tammy Cosentino said it can be frustrating.

“Anytime we have anybody come here, whether it’s a limo service or a pizza delivery, we have to give them the directions over the phone,” Cosentino said. “It’s tough when you forget to give directions, and you find out they are nowhere near.”

The village is working on the problem.

Most map sites get their information from two main data harvester companies: Tele Atlas and Navteq. Village planner Shannon Malik said she filled out correction reports with both companies, as well as with Mapquest, last year.

Tele Atlas now shows the street is updated in its system although Navteq does not; however, tangible improvements have been slow in coming. The street is searchable on Google Earth, and Mapquest shows a star on vacant land where the street should be. MSN’s mappoint, Google and Yahoo maps, AAA.com and yellowpages.com still have no record of Kacie Court.

A Mapquest spokesman said the amount of time between when a correction is reported and changed on a map depends on how fast the data harvesting companies research the matter, which at the soonest would be a quarter-year but could take much longer depending on the priority of the location.

Malik reported the Kacie Court correction eight months ago, but the spokesman was unable to say how long the research process takes or why the street continues to be elusive on Internet map sites.

At times, Keck said she grows weary of the issue and thinks the village could do more. According to her calculations, the owners of the 17 houses on the block each pay at least $5,000 yearly in property taxes.

“That’s $85,000, at the least,” Keck said. “For that much, I would think they could get us on the map.”

Malik said she filed a second round of error notifications in March after learning the issue remains unresolved.

Both the Police and Fire departments said Kacie Court does exist in their respective mapping systems taken from village maps.

Keck has never had a problem with police or fire being able to locate the street, but she is not taking any chances.

“Every year, I invite the Fire Department to our block party,” she said.
