Airport travelers feeling winter pain

LOCAL SCHOOL CLOSINGS AND DELAYS

10:20 a.m.: No major incidents reported in Downers Grove

Sgt. David Bormann of the Downers Grove Police Department said there were some minor fender benders and a few cars stuck in the snow, but no major problems as a result of Friday's snow storm.

8:25 a.m.: Flights canceled, delayed at airports

Hundreds of flights have been canceled at O'Hare International and Chicago Midway airports as a result of the winter storm.

O'Hare has seen 300 flights canceled, and Midways has had about two dozen cancellations, said Karen Pride, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Airport System.

The two airports were experiencing minor delays Friday morning, Pride said. "We anticipate more delays later in the day," she added.

Travelers are encourage to check with their airlines before going to the airport to find out if flights have been canceled or delayed, Pride said.

8:18 a.m.: La Grange focuses on main road, moves to side streets

La Grange Public Works Director Ryan Gillingham said his crews are focusing their attention on main road early Friday and will move to side streets later in the day.

"We're certainly keeping up with the snow as it's coming down," Gillingham said. "It is going to take some time to get the streets completely opened."

La Grange police have not received any reports of incidents related to the weather.

7:54 a.m.: Riverside plowing now, salt to come

Riverside's Public Works crews have been out since midnight Friday plowing the village's winding streets.

"They're doing pretty well," said Maribeth Reimer, administrative assistant for the Public Works Department.

The crews are focusing on clearing roads and will salt streets later Friday, she said.

Police have not received reports of any major incidents related to the weather.

7:44 a.m. Berwyn crews tackling 'thick, heavy' snow

Crews in Berwyn have been out since 11 p.m. Thursday clearing the city's roads.

"It was a pretty bad snow," Public Works Director Patrick Ryan said. "It was very thick and heavy."

Ryan said that while the job is "taking longer than we would like," the major roadways are in excellent condition.

"The major thoroughfares are down to water already," Ryan said.

Crews started clearing side streets Friday morning, he said.

Police said no major incidents related to the storm have been reported.

7:31 a.m.: Train hits snow plow in Brookfield

An unmanned snow plow near the Brookfield Metra station was hit by Metra train without passengers, causing delays for trains on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe line.

Deputy Police Chief Jeffrey Leh said officers are on the scene investigating the incident, but no injuries have been reported.

Outbound trains had to be stopped as a result of the incident, Metra spokesman Tom Miller said. This will cause future delays for inbound trains, he added.

7:20 a.m.: Hinsdale clearing roads

Crews from Hinsdale's Public Service Department hit the roads at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, and the crew was expanded at 4 a.m. Friday, Director George Franco said.

Road were almost completely cleared by 7 a.m. and commuters should be able to get out of their driveways without problems, Franco said.

That doesn't mean the commute will be quick, he added.

"People have to go slow," Franco said.

There have been no car crashes or other major incidents related to the storm, police said.

7:07 a.m.: Road crews out in Downers Grove, no crashes reported

Road crews have been working overnight in Downers Grove and will continue plowing as long as the winter storm continues, according to the Public Works Department.

No car crashes or other problems have been reported in the village, police said.

6:55 a.m.: No major problems on Cook County highways

Plows have been out since 11 p.m. Thursday on the Cook County highway system.

There are no major road problems in the District 3 area, which includes the western suburbs, a spokesman said.

6:47 a.m.: Snow accumulation light so far

Snowfall throughout the area so far has been lighter than expected.

As of 6 a.m., there were 2.4 inches of accumulation in Downers Grove and 1.9 inches at O'Hare, according to the National Weather Service.

6:45 a.m.: DuPage highways clear

The DuPage County Highway Department had 29 plows on the roads Thursday in anticipation of the storm, and the county's highways are clear.

"We don't have any major incidents to report," county spokesman Jason Gerwig said. "We've had plows going all night."

6:23 a.m.: Powerless residents on the rise

As of 6 a.m. the number of ComEd customers without power is up to 14,000. Most outages are in the utility provider's southern region, which includes the southside of Chicago and southern suburbs between Midway and the Indiana border.

6:20 a.m.: Tollways clear, some Interstates covered

The tollways in the western suburbs are clear, but pavement is wet, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. Light snow is expected to fall throughout the morning commute.

Interstate 55 was 75 percent snow or ice covered from Joliet to Interstate 355 and 100 percent covered from 355 to Chicago's Lake Shore Drive as of 6 a.m., according to IDOT.

As of 6 a.m. Interstate 290 was 100 percent snow or ice covered, according to IDOT.

6:10 a.m.: Outages south of Chicago

About 11,000 ComEd customers are without power as of 5 a.m. Most of those customers are in southern Chicago between Chicago Midway Airport and the Indiana border, said ComEd spokeswoman Aliza Zatkowski. About 100 crews are out working to restore power, she said.

5:51 a.m.: Snow to continue

The National Weather Service is predicting that the storm will continue through the morning. The forecast calls for 2 to 4 inches of snow in the morning and a chance of snow showers in the afternoon with a total accumulation of 4 to 8 inches. Ice accumulation of about one-quarter inch is also expected, according to the National Weather Service.
