Former police officer charged with theft of guns

A former Clarendon Hills police officer was charged today with several felony counts of theft after he allegedly took guns from the police department’s evidence room while he was an officer.

Daniel M. Ryan, 48, of Westmont, was charged with two counts of aggravated possession of a stolen firearm, five counts of unlawful possession of a stolen firearm, one count of theft and three counts of official misconduct, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

 Ryan turned himself in Friday ehutkin 5/13/11 May 13 to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office where he posted the required 10 percent of the $30,000 bail issued by Judge Robert Kleeman. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 14 in front of Judge Daniel Guerin, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office.

Officials said the State’s Attorney’s Office and the FBI began the investigation in February after e authorities received an anonymous tip into the disappearance of guns from the Clarendon Hills Police Department’s evidence room. The investigation led authorities to charge Ryan, who resigned from the department last month. 

Ryan’s accused of stealing five weapons including an Ithaca M1911 A1 World War II U.S. Army .45 caliber gun, a .22 caliber Short Butler, a Smith & Wesson .38 caliber Airlight Special, a Mossberg 590 12 gauge shotgun and a Connecticut Valley Bobcat .50 caliber gun.

None of the weapons allegedly stolen were involved in any crime or criminal case, and were the result of a weapons “turn in” program.

The alleged thefts occurred troughout 2007,  officials said.
