With the recent crowning of "Glamarella" as Intercontinental and Women's Champions respectively, I got to thinking about the place of comedy in professional wrestling.  Much like any entertainment art form, wrestling has drama, action and, yes, comedy.

I remember a memorable comedy match between Tracy Smothers and The Blue Meanie at one of the Hardcore Homecoming events Shane Douglas put together. I loved this match, as it wasn't any kind of technical showcase, but any match that features a middle-aged man having a dance-off with a 300-pounder is pure comic gold.

But I still have to ask the question: Can a comic wrestler ever be a world champion or, at the very least, a main eventer?

The main purveyors of comedy wrestlers are guys who have great character but little marketable ring skill (see Santino Marella), or who are forced into a comedic role in an attempt to give them personality (I'm looking at you "Lance Storm dancing angle").

On a tangent, it is a sad state of affairs when Lance Storm, one of the best wrestlers on the planet, is forced into a stupid angle like the dancing one. Why can't WWE just market athleticism? I also look at the funny foreigner gimmick, like Kenzo Suzuki in WWE or Curry Man in TNA.

So can you imagine Santino Marella as World Heavyweight Champion? Can you imagine what possible program they could work with him and say, John Cena or Batista? As much as many of you may loathe him right now, Chris Jericho raised a good point in a recent promo, as long as a wrestler focuses on purely entertaining the fans, they won't advance too far.

In my mind, a wrestler has to balance character, mic skills and ring work into a marketable package to soar to the top. If you look at guys like Kurt Angle, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, John Cena, Hulk Hogan or Ric Flair, you will see the complete mix of all of these elements. While some on the list may not have been great wrestlers (Hogan, Cena) they still manage to tell a compelling story both on the microphone and in the ring.
