A former teacher and football coach in Hinsdale Township High School District 86 has agreed to a $10,000 settlement with the district regarding a lawsuit he filed last summer.
Tony Lombardi, head football coach and a physical education teacher at Hinsdale Central before he was fired in March 2006, sued District 86 last July seeking unspecified damages. Lombardi alleged his contract was breached before he was dismissed.

Justin Petrarca, an attorney for District 86, said the district’s insurance carrier decided a settlement was the best course of action in the case. Earlier this summer, School Board members authorized the insurance company to seek a settlement, Petrarca said.
“It’s a pretty good result,” he added.
Originally, the lawsuit — which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois — sought $350,000 in damages, Petrarca said.
Charles Thomas Siedlecki, a Chicago attorney representing Lombardi in the matter, declined to comment on the case or the terms of the settlement.
Lombardi named District 86 Superintendent Nicholas Wahl, Hinsdale Central’s athletic director Tom Schweer and then-principal James Ferguson, as well as board members, in his lawsuit. He claimed the three administrators each played a role in an alleged concerted effort to discredit Lombardi and force either his resignation or dismissal.
A month after he was fired by District 86, Lombardi was hired to coach football at a high school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. District 86 hired Mike DiMatteo, who previously coached football at Lake Zurich High School, to replace Lombardi.
Schweer resigned this March from his position as athletic director and will be replaced by Paul Moretta, an assistant athletic director at New Trier High School in north suburban Winnetka.
Administrator Kevin Pobst has assumed Ferguson’s role as Central principal. Ferguson has been on indefinite medical leave since March.
