Accomplishments

• Rebecca Hu, a senior at Downers Grove South High School, of Woodridge, was one of only 13 college-bound students in Illinois and one of 85 in the United States to achieve a 36, the highest possible composite score, on the April 2007 national test administration of the ACT. About 26,000 Illinois students, and 446,000 from across the nation, took the ACT in April. The average composite score for the national high school graduating class of 2006 was 21.1.

• Ryan Barrett of Downers Grove was recently recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, the national leadership and honors organization at the University of Illinois at Urbana — Champaign.

• Garrick Peiffer, of Downers Grove, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis on May 25 and was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. Peiffer successfully completed four years of intensive academic, physical and professional training, resulting in a bachelor of science degree with a major in physics. Peiffer has been assigned to Nuclear Power School in Charleston, S.C., where he will continue training for the Submarine Service beginning this month. He married Nicole LaVallie on June 2, and they reside in Mount Pleasant, S.C. Both LaVallie and Peiffer are 2003 graduates of Downers Grove North High School.

• Catherine “Cate” Cetta, a Saint Mary’s College senior and 2004 graduate of Downers Grove North High School, is one of two new members on the Saint Mary’s College Board of Trustees.  She will serve a one-year term as the board’s student trustee. Over the past three years at Saint Mary’s College, Cetta has participated in student government, political science club, campus ministry as a Eucharistic minister and lector. She is also a member of the University of Notre Dame figure skating team. She spent a year studying abroad in Rome during her sophomore year and held an internship at South Bend’s NBC affiliate WNDU-TV during her junior year. She is spending her summer interning at Women for Women International in Washington, D.C. With a double major in political science and history, Cetta hopes to pursue graduate studies in communications after commencement in May 2008.
