After harsh conditions hit Darien roads last winter, including freezing water worsening cracks, temporary patches no longer suffice.
Construction to repave three Darien intersections — Cass Avenue and 75th Street, Plainfield Road and 75th Street, and Clarendon Hills Road and 75th Street — began Sunday.
The DuPage County Division of Transportation reviewed pavements in the area that were hit hardest by the weather, said Christopher Snyder, chief highway engineer for the division.
Realizing that temporarily remedying pavement issues with patches would no longer fix the problem, the 25-year-old Darien intersections required more drastic measures.
While the division is responsible for regular maintenance of county highways, the damage to the specific intersections was beyond the division’s means in terms of repaving and traffic control. The division turned to a contractor to complete the paving work.
“We knew we had to do something about those intersections and we thought our crew could handle it but there is too much traffic there and too many patches needed,” Snyder said.
With work being completed mostly at night, traffic issues were alleviated, allowing for a more accelerated process Snyder said.
Milling work was complete by Monday Sept. 29, prep work took place over the course of the week, paving was set to begin Friday, Oct. 3, and striping is schedule to begin early next week.
Snyder said no further major roadway improvements are proposed in the area for the year.
“We decided to put a nice, solid, concrete level on top to provide a solution for years to come,” Snyder said.
