1 Walk this way
With Western Springs celebrating its 125th anniversary, there’s no better time than to participate in the Western Springs Historical Society’s House Walk. The walk, which costs $35 the day of the event or $30 if purchased in advance, starts at 11 a.m. and continues until 5 p.m. May 22. Participants also receive a book with the history of Western Springs, including advertisements from local home designers, painters and construction professionals.
2 A community fundraiser
Proceeds from the walk benefit the Western Springs Historical Society, a volunteer organization that preserves the heritage of Western Springs through museum collections as well as educational programs for schools. The House Walk, which takes place every two years, is the group’s primary source of operating money, used to run the Historic Water Tower museum and events such as “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile,” a theatrical performance for children at the Western Springs Recreation Center.
3 The places you’ll go
The walk features six homes in Western Springs, including some historically significant houses and newer buildings. The homes are located on Park Lane, Grand and Franklin avenues and Prospect, Maple and 46th streets. “Because this is our 125th anniversary, we tried to select houses of different architectural periods,” said Allyson Zak, president of Western Springs Historical Society.
4 Inspiration to participate
The House Walk began in 1986 and continued for 13 years before it stopped in 1999. However, the Historical Society brought it back 10 years later. “We revisited it in 2009,” Zak said. “It’s tough to get volunteers and to get people to donate their homes for the day.”
5 Last year’s results
When the Historical Society hosted the event in 2009, about 750 people showed to help raise $27,000. “Strategically, it fits with our mission of preserving history and showing different periods of architectural history,” Zak said.
