It may not seem like it, but high school students can be under a lot of stress.

Academics and extra-curricular activities can pile up pretty quickly and leave a student wondering what to do first.

Lyons Township High School’s Parent Teacher Council is planning on doing something about the issue at its next PTC meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, said PTC President Lisa Straface.

“We came upon the topic at the request from parents at a meeting,” Straface, who has two children at LT, said. “It’s to deal with the students applying to colleges and the stresses of taking the hardest courses they can at one time while juggling extra-curricular activities.”

Jeanne Widing, the LT student assistance program coordinator, and another LT counselor will speak about the subject of teens and stress at the meeting, which will be held in room C220 at the school’s South Campus, 4900 S. Willow Springs Road, Western Springs. Straface said the speakers will talk about stress at all four high school grade levels.

“Students have stress each year,” Straface said. “From freshman trying to get involved and figuring it out because they’re suddenly in high school classes to seniors (applying to) college. The purpose of the meeting is to learn some techniques and for parents to learn some suggestions on how to help their students and make sure they know how to deal with it.”

The meeting will also feature a question and answer session for parents. Straface said the meeting is open to any parent with a child at any local school. She said parents with eighth-grade students at nearby middle schools are encouraged to attend to learn how to deal with high school stress early.
